Getting started
What Space Waves is, whether it is free, and how to start playing in your browser.
What is Space Waves?
Space Waves is a free, single-player one-button arcade game. You hold a key, your mouse, or the screen to make a glowing ship climb through a neon tunnel, and release to let it fall. The tunnel scrolls endlessly and fills with walls, spikes, and rotating gears you have to dodge — the goal is simply to fly as far as possible before you touch something.
Is Space Waves free to play online?
Yes. Space Waves is completely free and runs entirely in your browser at spacewaves.lol. There is nothing to buy, download, or install, and no ads interrupt a run.
Do I need to download or install anything?
No. Space Waves is a 100% browser-based game built with HTML5 Canvas and JavaScript. It loads in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari, and other modern browsers on desktop and mobile without a plugin, app store listing, or installer.
Is Space Waves family-friendly?
Space Waves is a single-player arcade game with no chat, no user-generated content, and no in-game purchases. It is suitable as a quick, screen-friendly game for a wide age range.
Rules and scoring
How the thruster, obstacles, scoring, and game over work.
How do I play Space Waves?
Hold Space, W, the up arrow, your left mouse button, or your finger on a touchscreen to thrust your ship upward. Release to fall. Fly through the gaps in oncoming walls, spike strips, and rotating gears. Touching any obstacle, or the top or bottom edge of the screen, ends the run immediately, and your score is the distance you covered.
How does scoring work in Space Waves?
Your score is the distance your ship has flown through the tunnel, and it updates live as you play. There is no bonus scoring beyond distance — surviving longer is the only way to raise your score, and your best distance is saved automatically.
What ends a run in Space Waves?
A run ends the instant your ship touches a wall gate, a spike strip, a rotating gear, or the top or bottom edge of the play area. There is no health bar — one contact ends the run and shows your final distance.
Can I pause Space Waves?
Space Waves is designed as a short, focused arcade run rather than a long session you need to pause. If you need to step away, exit to the menu — your best score is already saved, and starting again takes one tap.
What are the controls for Space Waves?
Hold Space, W, or the up arrow on a keyboard, hold your left mouse button, or press and hold anywhere on a touchscreen. All of them do the same thing: thrust upward while held, fall while released. The M key toggles sound on and off.
What are the different obstacles in Space Waves?
Wall gates are full-height neon walls with one gap to fly through. Spike strips jut from the floor or ceiling and must be flown over or under rather than through. Rotating gears are circular hazards that sit mid-tunnel and only appear once a run has already sped up. See the modes page for when each one starts appearing.
Strategy and difficulty
How to fly further, how the tunnel gets harder, and how to read obstacles.
How do you get a high score in Space Waves?
Use short, repeated taps instead of one long hold — it gives far more precise control over your height. Watch the right edge of the screen for the next obstacle instead of reacting to what is already close, and ease your tap size down (not up) once the tunnel speeds up in the later stretch of a run. See the tips page for the full list of habits.
Does Space Waves have difficulty levels?
No — Space Waves has a single Endless run that keeps getting harder the farther you fly, rather than separate Easy/Medium/Hard modes. Speed, gap size, and which obstacles appear all ramp up together the longer a run lasts. Full details are on the modes page.
Why do I keep dying right after the game speeds up?
The transition into the faster, later stretch of a run (what the modes page calls Overdrive) is where gap size and speed both tighten at once. Most new players keep tapping the same way they did earlier and overcorrect. Switching to smaller, more frequent taps instead of harder ones usually fixes it.
Is there a trick to rotating gears?
Treat a gear like a single point obstacle rather than a wall: its hitbox is a circle around the hub, not the full spinning arms. Pick a lane clearly above or below the hub with margin to spare, rather than trying to time a pass close to the spinning parts.
Devices, saving, and accounts
Mobile play, browsers, local progress, and why a run might disappear.
Does Space Waves save my progress?
Yes. Your best distance, number of runs played, and sound preference are saved locally in your own browser. Nothing is sent to a server, and there is no account or login. Because the save lives on the device, a different phone, a new browser profile, or cleared site data will look like a fresh start.
Can I play Space Waves on mobile?
Yes. Space Waves is touch-first: press and hold anywhere on the game area to thrust, and lift your finger to fall. The layout adapts to phones, tablets, and desktops without needing a separate app.
Can I play Space Waves offline?
Space Waves is a browser game and needs a connection to load the page the first time. After that, some browsers may keep the tab responsive without a network connection, but there is no dedicated offline app or install package.
Is there a Space Waves app?
No official Space Waves app is required — the game is the website at spacewaves.lol. You can bookmark it or add the tab to your phone’s home screen if your browser supports that, but you still play in the browser.
Do I need an account to play Space Waves?
No. There is no sign-up, no email gate, and no profile. Your best distance and run count stay in this browser on this device. The tradeoff is that we cannot restore a run on a new device for you, since nothing is stored on our servers.
How do I reset my Space Waves progress?
Open Stats from the game menu, tap Reset progress, then confirm with the second tap. That clears your best distance and run count on this browser. It cannot be undone.
Why did my Space Waves progress disappear?
Local saves are lost if you clear cookies or site data for spacewaves.lol, switch browsers, use a private window that has since closed, or open the game on a different device. Some privacy tools and OS "lite" modes also wipe local storage. Because the save never left your browser, we cannot recover it from our side.
What browsers does Space Waves work on?
Any current browser with JavaScript and HTML5 Canvas support: Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari on desktop, plus their mobile counterparts. If the ship does not respond to input, try updating the browser, disabling a strict script blocker for this site, and reloading.
